Overcoming Nuclear Dangers

A two-day conference on nuclear disarmament, “Overcoming Nuclear Dangers” was co-sponsored by the World Political Forum, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nuclear Security Project (the initiative of George P. Shultz, Sam Nunn, Henry A. Kissinger and William J. Perry) and held at the Farnesina, in Rome.
The principal objective for this meeting was to facilitate a dialogue on the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and the steps necessary to reducing nuclear threats.
The agenda included presentations by Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini, President Mikhail S. Gorbachev, former U.S. Secretary of State George P. Shultz. The conference gathered together more than 60 former and current government officials and experts from more than 20 countries and 6 continents, who discussed the possibilities of creating a “joint enterprise” among all nations for a nuclear weapons free world, addressing the safe expansion of nuclear energy, strengthening the security of nuclear materials around the globe, with the aim of contributing to the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference scheduled for 2010.
