A new World Political Architecture
27-28 October 2006
Bosco Marengo, WPF Seat
Following the end of the Cold War, the international community has, inevitably, had to face new challenges, having to do with rapid globalization, or with outdated politics unable to solve new problems. Growing intolerance and violence, reliance on the use of force and unilateral actions which bring tragedy to millions of people seem to lead politics and politicians into dead-ends. The system of international organizations created in the previous era is not up to the new threats and is losing effectiveness and authority. As a result, contemporary politics is often confined to impulsive responses to the new, unprecedented challenges.
The international seminar “A new World Political Architecture”, held in the restored rooms of the Monumental Complex of Santa Croce in Bosco Marengo, created an occasion for a confrontation among the 41 outstanding participants of the international political scene who took part in it. The seminar aimed at individuating new rules of governance to be suggested to the current leaders of politics and economics at the international level, as to elaborate a different way for the solving of the international crisis. The debate focused on the revision of international politics in terms of change of the nature and conception of “sovereignty”, no more coinciding with nations, but with the various non-state actors and multilateral organizations influencing today politics at all levels. The participants talked, among other things, about the new notion of “security”, much more complex than the simply military one, or the importance of media, now able to bring the world much closer and to mobilize civil society. Particular attention was given to the reform of international institutions system, that should foster an effective global governance, respectful of social justice to all world citizens through sustainable development, education, the improvement of health and environment conditions and the promotion of women’s rights.
