Media between Citizens and Power
In the book “Media between Citizens and Power” you will find the full text of the debate that took place on June 23-24 2006, during the Regional Seminar which gathered in Venice, on the Island of San Servolo. This Seminar, jointly organized by the World Political Forum and the Province of Venice, was meant to be an important contribution to the general process of construction of the emerging world civil society which needs information as it needs blood, nerves, morality and brains.
The role of media in the modern “Information Society”‚ is certainly a wide-ranging subject that calls for in-depth discussion. The seminar focus was directed on several key aspects that are of greatest interest to policy-makers, in particular on the relationship between new information technologies and governance; between democracy and the information sphere; between media’s owners and financial and political authorities. Its participants paid special attention to the way media are affected by various poles of power and factors of influence: political, economic, and technological ones. They also discussed the public role of media and the ways in which they can be used by civil society institutions to protect and develop democracy, with particular attention to the rights of citizens.
“Media between Citizens and Power” is edited by Andrei Grachev and Chiara Blengino and published by Chimienti Editore.
