Human Rights and Democracy in a Globalized World

December 30, 2008

6 - 7 November 2008
Bosco Marengo, WPF Seat

Set in the Monumental Complex of Santa Croce in Bosco Marengo, institutional seat of the WPF, the conference “Human Rights and Democracy in a Globalized World” was intended to be an occasion for meeting and debate with the aim of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The main objective was to conceive modern and effective instruments for the promotion of the universal values of democracy, justice and respect for the human beings.

The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Right has not prevented some governments from perpetrating systematic violations of the rights that intended to be protected and the very definition of human rights is undergoing today remarkable transformations. It is passing from an initial model that was centred on western culture and tradition to a wider model, that keeps in due consideration the experiences of other cultures and civilizations.

The important personalities that participated to the conference tried to confront old and new aspects of this subject and to analyse the contribution that can be given by all the players involved in the definition, monitoring and active defence of human rights.
