From Global Warning to Global Policy
28-29 March 2008
Turin
2008 marked the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Club of Rome.
The famous report “The Limits to Growth” issued by the Club of Rome in 1972, as well as other warnings formulated in other reports and documents (some of which within the United Nations) reflected the voices of the scientific community, of the ecologist movements and the civil society, that were worried about the dramatic consequences of an uncontrolled human activity and of a chaotic economic development, for the future of humanity and the state of health of our planet. If some of them played an important role in the awakening of public opinion and the mobilization of civil society, they were mostly ignored by the decision-makers, above all by the political leaders and the extreme necessity and urgency to react to the global warning were never seriously considered.
The World Political Forum and the Club of Rome gathered together different actors of the political and environmental milieu, a joint initiative that was the mean to recall the political institutions to their responsibility and at the same time to fill the gap between citizens and political institutions.
Aim of the meeting was to be a call to action in order to guarantee the survival of the human race and a safe future to the next generations.
