1985-2005
Twenty Years that Changed the World
4-6 March 2005
Turin
The General Assembly of the WPF entitled: “1985 – 2005: Twenty Years that Changed the World” took place in March 2005 when the 20th anniversary of Perestroika was celebrated.
The resolution of communist utopia, the end of the war, the new course of democratic relations in Europe and the new world order were subjects of the Seminar. Developing these important themes with the help of historic key players gave everybody the chance to reflect on facts and processes that we witnessed and to deeply understand the past twenty years with the aim of better focusing on present times.
Having put an end to the ideological and political division of the world and to the military standoff, the Perestroika drew a final line under the post-war stage of the world history, marking the end of an era that started with the upheavals of the early 20th century and the Russian Revolution.
The consequences of the events that took place after the Perestroika have continued to impact the situation in the world, their lessons can be put to use by policy-makers of today and learning from the achievements and disappointments since then will certainly help in the search for solutions to the unprecedented challenges of the new 21st century.
