Life Senator of the Italian Republic since 2003. He was Prime Minister of Italy from 1970 to 1972. Member of Parliament since 1948, he served as Agriculture Minister and later as Industry and Commerce Minister. He was six times Treasury Minister and three times Finance Minister. In 1977 he was elected President of the European Parliament and in 1980 he became Minister for Foreign Affairs, a role that he had five other times, the last in 1992. In 1989 he served again in the European Parliament, where he was also President of the Special Commission for the Achievement of the Maastricht Treaty Targets.
